Scientists have pioneered a new technology for lithium batteries: greener, cheaper and faster to charge
A research team led by Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) researcher Yan Wang has pioneered a solvent-free method for producing electrodes for lithium-ion batteries. This novel approach could result in electrodes that are more environmentally friendly, cost-effective and charge faster than those currently available, which could revolutionize battery manufacturing for electric vehicles.

The team published this dry-print manufacturing technique in the journal Joule, which avoids the harmful solvents inherent in traditional electrode production methods. The scientists say this innovative process is scalable and has the potential to reduce electrode production costs by up to 15 percent. In addition, the researchers report that skipping the traditional drying and solvent recovery process reduces battery manufacturing energy consumption by about 47 percent.

China's lithium battery technology continues to make breakthroughs. From the number of lithium battery-related papers published, the number of lithium battery-related papers published in China has shown an increasing trend year by year since 2010, which shows that the lithium battery scientific research heat continues to rise. As of August 2022, 69,366 papers related to lithium batteries have been published in China.

GGII data show that in 2020, thanks to the growth of lithium battery market demand in emerging industries and fields such as new energy vehicles, energy storage, electric bicycles, and power tools, China's lithium battery shipments were 142.9GWh. In 2021, China's demand for power batteries and energy storage batteries surged, and the annual shipment of lithium batteries reached 327 GWh.

GGII expects that in the next five years, driven by new energy vehicles, two-wheelers, base stations, power storage, power tools, 3C digital, etc., China's power lithium battery shipments will grow at a compound annual rate of more than 25% by 2025. According to this growth rate, China's power lithium battery shipments are expected to exceed 839GWh in 2027.

Ouyang Minggao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, believes that China's battery technology innovation potential is still huge, and a new generation of battery technology is constantly making breakthroughs. In the first half of this year, the production of lithium-ion batteries across the industry chain exceeded 280G watt-hours, an increase of 150%. Industry-wide revenue exceeded 480 billion and is expected to exceed one trillion for the whole year.
